CS2 September Update: Rush, Reloads, and Premier Changes
The September 22 CS2 update adds a queued 3v3 mode, changes Premier map selection, and adjusts several gameplay sounds and settings. These are the changes players are most likely to notice in a match.
The update also quietly added Chicken Eggs and pet chickens. Our Chicken Egg guide explains how to claim an egg, hatch it, and raise a pet.
Key facts
- Rush sends two teams of three through randomly selected battle arenas toward an opponent’s castle.
- Premier teams now pick four candidate maps, then the game randomly selects one.
- Holding reload performs a slower, silent reload; unscoping a sniper weapon no longer makes a sound.
- Crosshairs are resolution independent, with a new settings tab and styles.
- Ancient, Cache, Mirage, and Train received targeted geometry fixes.
- The update also changed grenade purchase limits and added Clan Tags for Steam Community Group members.
Rush adds a queued 3v3 route to the castle
Rush is a queued 3v3 mode played across a series of battle arenas. The arenas are selected randomly for each match. Teams push toward the opponent’s castle, and a round is won by controlling the tower after eliminating the other team or when time expires.
The random arenas mean the same sequence is not guaranteed each time. Valve’s Rush announcement has the mode overview and trailer.
Premier now picks maps instead of banning down to one
Premier map selection now gives both teams a chance to put preferred maps into the final draw. The official patch notes describe the sequence: Team 1 picks one map, Team 2 picks two, then Team 1 picks the last. The game randomly selects one of those four maps.
This replaces the old elimination-style veto. A map your group has practiced can enter the draw without being your only possible result, and neither team controls the final selection outright.
Reload and scope sounds have changed
Players can now hold the reload key to reload silently, but more slowly. Use it when staying quiet matters and you have enough time. In a close fight, the extra time can leave you short on bullets if an opponent swings early.
Unscoping a sniper weapon no longer produces a sound. Valve also increased visual clarity globally and improved the fidelity of bullet-impact decals. These changes affect the information players get from audio and visual feedback, so expect to reassess familiar timings as you play.
The ammo_grenade_limit_total setting now also enforces the total number of grenades a player may purchase in a round. The patch notes also confirm that map chickens can take damage from the Zeus x27.
Crosshair and map adjustments
Crosshairs are now resolution independent. The settings menu has a dedicated Crosshair/Scopes tab with updated settings and new styles. The default crosshair is now Dynamic Quad, which Valve says better represents weapon accuracy.
Four maps received focused fixes:
- Ancient: fixed holes in the world in Long A Main Hall and adjusted door geometry and grenade clipping inside Jaguar.
- Cache: fixed gaps and clipping around the blue doors in Mid.
- Mirage: reinforced the scaffolding by Balcony on A site.
- Train: blocked a pixel gap in the crates on A site.
These are geometry fixes rather than a broad layout overhaul. Check your usual grenade lineups and angles around the affected areas.
A few other changes
The update added the ability to set a Clan Tag for players who belong to Steam Community Groups. The tag can be adjusted from the Player Profile. The patch also updates Source 2 engine code.
