October 2025 CS2 Update: How Knives and Gloves Became Obtainable Through Trade-Ups
The October 2025 CS2 trade-up update changed a rule that had been true for years: knives and gloves could not be obtained from trade-up contracts. On October 22, 2025, Valve added a separate five-Covert route that can produce knives, gloves, and, in one case, StatTrak knives. The new route has its own item count, quality requirements, and output rules.
Key facts
- Before October 2025, a standard trade-up used 10 skins of one rarity to produce one item from the next rarity tier.
- Covert was the highest normal rarity reachable through that system.
- Valve added a separate contract route for exactly 5 Covert items on October 22, 2025.
- Five regular Covert items can produce one regular knife or one regular pair of gloves.
- Five StatTrak Covert items can produce one StatTrak knife.
- StatTrak gloves are not available through this route.
- The special-item outcome is tied to a collection represented by the input items.
Trade-up contracts before October 2025
The original CS2 trade-up contract system was straightforward: submit 10 eligible skins of the same rarity, then receive one skin from the next rarity tier. Inputs from different collections could be used together, while the collections of those inputs affected the possible outputs.
Covert was the top normal rarity tier. That meant a traditional contract could produce a Covert skin, but it could not continue beyond Covert into the knife or glove pool.
The October 2025 CS2 trade-up update
Valve extended the Trade Up Contract on October 22, 2025. The official patch notes describe two new exchanges:
- 5 StatTrak Covert items can be exchanged for 1 StatTrak knife.
- 5 regular Covert items can be exchanged for 1 regular knife item or 1 regular gloves item.
Valve described the possible output as coming from "a collection of one of the items provided." The collection of the Covert inputs therefore matters. A Covert skin does not provide access to every knife or glove in CS2.

How the five-Covert trade-up works
The five-Covert contract is separate from the normal 10-item contract. It does not change the usual rarity ladder or make a 10-item Covert trade-up possible.
The new route requires exactly five Covert-quality skins in one of these two groups:
| Input type | Number of inputs | Possible output |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Covert skins | 5 | Regular knife or regular gloves |
| StatTrak Covert skins | 5 | StatTrak knife |
| Standard trade-up inputs | 10 | One item of the next normal rarity tier |
The regular and StatTrak rules are distinct. Five regular Covert skins are the route for regular knives or gloves. Five StatTrak Covert skins are the route for StatTrak knives. Valve did not add a StatTrak glove outcome.
Collection requirements for knives and gloves
The collection attached to each input matters because the result comes from a collection represented in the contract. Eligibility for the five-Covert route depends on the input quality, the regular or StatTrak status of those items, and their represented collections.
All five inputs must be Covert quality. Five regular Covert inputs can produce a regular knife or regular gloves, while five StatTrak Covert inputs can produce a StatTrak knife. The collections represented by those inputs determine the available special-item pools.
The phrase "trade up five reds for a knife" is incomplete. Five Covert skins are necessary, but the represented collections determine what can appear in the outcome pool.
Old rules and new rules compared
| Aspect | Before October 2025 | After the October 2025 update |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum items per contract | 10 | 10 for standard contracts, or 5 for the special Covert route |
| Highest possible standard outcome | Covert | Covert through the standard route; knives or gloves through the five-Covert route |
| Knives obtainable through trade-ups | No | Yes. Regular knives use 5 regular Covert inputs; StatTrak knives use 5 StatTrak Covert inputs |
| Gloves obtainable through trade-ups | No | Yes, from 5 regular Covert inputs |
| StatTrak knives obtainable | No | Yes, from 5 StatTrak Covert inputs |
| StatTrak gloves obtainable | No | No |
What Valve officially confirmed
Valve's patch note confirms the input count, the Covert-quality requirement, the distinction between regular and StatTrak inputs, and the allowed outcome types.
The official wording also confirms that an output comes from a collection represented by an input item. It does not turn every Covert skin into a route to every knife or glove.
Community tools may list specific collections and potential outcome pools, but Valve's update note is the primary source for the underlying rule.
Common misconceptions
"Knives and gloves still cannot come from trade-ups"
That statement describes the pre-October 2025 system. Since the October 22 update, they can be obtained through the separate five-Covert route.
"A 10-item Covert contract now gives a knife"
No. Valve added a five-item Covert exchange. The standard 10-item system remains separate.
"Any five Covert skins can produce any knife or gloves"
No. The outcome comes from a collection represented by the provided items. Collection eligibility still controls the potential special-item pool.
"Souvenir skins were part of the October 2025 change"
No. The October 2025 patch note only introduced the five-Covert knife and glove routes. Valve later updated normal trade-ups to allow Souvenir-quality items alongside normal items, while removing Souvenir attributes from the inputs and returning a normal item. That later change is separate from the five-Covert system. See Valve's later Souvenir trade-up update.
Summary
In October 2025, Valve added a new CS2 trade-up route for special items. Five regular Covert skins can produce a regular knife or regular gloves, while five StatTrak Covert skins can produce a StatTrak knife.
That rule did not replace the traditional 10-item contract. It created a separate system with a different item count and different outcomes. The collection represented by the Covert inputs still determines the possible knife or glove pool.
